EC2 Instance For Bahrain Server No Longer Optimal

1

Just a shot in the dark here, I don’t know if anyone can help here, but I’ve tried everything I could think of to fix this issue. I mainly use my EC2 instance to make a VPN for Gaming/low ping purposes. Yesterday morning, suddenly my Bahrain Server Openvpn Connect VPN shot up to 140 ping to Europe and almost everywhere else is much worse than just leaving it off now. It worked flawlessly for the first 7 days, it had 90ms to Europe and it was great for Middle East standards. It hasn’t went down since yesterday, I shut down all my instances after trying to make more with various different settings and it not changing anything. I used other people’s same Bahrain Servers they have open on Mysterium VPN from Amazon so I could test if it’s just mine, and I had the same results from 4 different ones but it worked fine and had low ping a few days prior when I checked those VPNs.

A VPN uses the Internet as the underlying layer. The Internet is connected through multiple ISPs, and latency is always changing depending on the ISPs and the network conditions on each leg. Using a leased line service like AWS Direct Connect can provide lower and more consistent latency compared to the Internet. Alternatively, you can use TGW to use the accelerated VPN feature that leverages the AWS backbone.

  • Could be ignorant but I have one follow up question, thanks for answering as well. The question is, I used a ping spotter to see what the issue is when I connect to the VPN, and I get 16ms to the AWS Bahrain server, but it starts to grow in latency further than it used to when I ping to the usual Europe server IP address I play in. What I’m curious about is will Direct connect help me latency issues after I connect to the VPN, because it seems like connecting to the VPN has 0 issue.

  • When you ping a server in Bahrain and see 16ms, you are probably near the Bahrain region. If you ping Europe after connecting to the VPN, the VPN will again travel across the internet and through multiple ISPs to reach Europe, increasing the latency. For a use case like yours, where you are using a VPN for gaming, it would be difficult to use the AWS direct connect service. This is because AWS direct connect is for connecting your office or data center to the AWS network.
