FSx unable to increase storage capacity

0

Hi,

I am trying to increase an FSx for Windows Storage Capacity from 3TB to 4TB. I increased it yesterday from 2TB to 3TB and it worked fine. Today, when I try to do it, it gives me this message:
Unable to perform the storage capacity update; there is a request already in progress.

But the increase from yesterday finished, so why can't I increase it today?

Thanks.
Paul

Hi nl135,

We'd be happy to look into your specific file system and answer your question if you can share more details regarding your file system via private message. But based on your description, it sounds like you're not yet able to grow storage capacity on your file system because it was still undergoing the storage optimization process in the background from the previous storage update operation.

As described in our documentation (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/fsx/latest/WindowsGuide/managing-storage-capacity.html), when you increase the storage capacity of your Amazon FSx file system, behind the scenes, Amazon FSx adds a new, larger set of disks to your file system. The new capacity is available for use within minutes. Amazon FSx then runs a storage optimization process in the background to transparently migrate data from the old disks to the new, larger disks. You can't make further storage capacity increases on a file system until 6 hours after the last increase was requested, or until the storage optimization process has completed, whichever time is longer.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,
Amazon FSx team

Hi,

I updated the capacity since yesterday afternoon. So not sure why it is not working since it has passed the 6 hour window.

How can I private message you? Sorry, it's my first time using the forum.

Thanks.

Hi prashaws,

I just tried to increase the storage capacity but it is still giving me the same message. I sent you a private message yesterday with the FSx Id. Did you get a chance to see what is happening?

Thanks.

Hi nl135,

I saw your private message just now, and we were able to look into your file system. The reason you're not yet able to scale storage another time on your file system is that the previous update activity has still not completed.

As I mentioned earlier, when you increase the storage capacity of your Amazon FSx file system, behind the scenes, Amazon FSx adds a new, larger set of disks to your file system. While the new capacity is available for use within minutes, a storage optimization process is run in the background to transparently migrate data from the old disks to the new, larger disks. You can't make further storage capacity increases on a file system until the storage optimization process has completed (or until 6 hours after the last increase was requested, whichever time is longer). You can monitor the progress percent of the background optimization process on the AWS Management Console page for your Amazon FSx file system under the "Updates" tab.

Thank you,
Amazon FSx team

OK. Thanks. I didn't know about the updates tab. That's helpful.

I just didn't expect it to take this long to migrate the data. I will take that into consideration next time I increase the capacity.

Thanks for looking into it.
