General question related to Capacity reservation sharing

0

Hello team, I have three question for which if you can provide more clarification and public facing document, it would be great help.

  1. As far as we understand it, it doesn't matter on what account inside the Organization the reservation is made, it is applied for all the accounts in the Organization. For example: if I make a 300 m5.large SKU reservation on the Root account, it does not matter that I do not use any on this account, the 300 reserved instances will be divided among the rest of the accounts as the need arises. Is this correct?
  2. From the same page (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/capacity-reservation-sharing.html) I see that "Capacity Reservation sharing is not available to new AWS accounts or AWS accounts that have a limited billing history." Does this mean that newly created accounts that will be part of our Organization would not available for the reserved instances to be divided among them. If so, when they becomes eligible and is there any criteria for that?
  3. Is it possible that, I will delete some of the accounts in the future and create new ones. I need to know what would happen in this situation?
  4. What if I were to make reservations from member account, non root account and after a year I would delete the account. Would I still be able to use the reservations at an Organization level?

Hello,

  1. The Ondemand Capacity Reservation is only applied to the ressources running on the account where the reservation was made , unless you explicitly share it with other AWS accounts or within an AWS organisation.

A Capacity Reservation owner can share a Capacity Reservation with:

  1. Specific AWS accounts inside or outside of its AWS organization
  2. An organizational unit inside its AWS organization
  3. Its entire AWS organization

Documentation : Share a Capacity Reservation https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/capacity-reservation-sharing.html#sharing-cr

  1. Regarding the note "Capacity Reservation sharing is not available to new AWS accounts or AWS accounts that have a limited billing history." --> New accounts that are linked to a qualified primary (payer) account or through an AWS Organization are exempt from this restriction.

Documentation : Q: Can I share an On-Demand Capacity Reservation with another AWS account? https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/faqs/#On-Demand_Capacity_Reservation

  1. if the accounts to be deleted are the owners of some reservations , the ressources on the account including the OD capacity reservations made will remain active for 90 days (grace period) , and after that period , any AWS resources that were in the account will be deleted permanently including the OD capacity reservation. So in summary : The ODCRs will be deleted from the owning account after 90 days along with other resources. Sharing will discontinue.

Documentation : After the 90 day grace period expires: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/organizations/latest/userguide/orgs_manage_accounts_close.html

  1. The same answer of the previous question applies here. Since these member accounts could be deleted anytime in the future , the best way in this case would be to buy the reservations from the payer account in the organisation , and share them with the member accounts accordingly.

I can see that you are referring to the root account in an organisation , i think that you are using the term "root account" to refer to the "Management account" or "Payer account" in an organisation. The management account is the AWS account you use to create your organization. From the management account, you can create other accounts in your organization (member accounts) , and this account has the role of a payer account and is responsible for paying all charges accrued by the accounts in its organization [1].

[1] Q: What is a management account ? https://aws.amazon.com/organizations/faqs/

I hope this helps.

  • I have a problem. I'm not able to share my ODCR within or outside my org (account) using RAM. I get the error message saying, "Failed to associate" in the Capacity Reservation details page. What is happening? I created an ODCR and tried to share it via RAM (within and outside my AWS account). I'm always getting the "Failed to associate" error.
