Can't create an FSx for OpenZFS storage

0

Greetings, I'm just trying to test out how FSx for OpenZFS works - I have a test account with a simple VPS with the defaults (two AZ, four subnet, 2 public/2 private etc.) I want to make the volume available for instances living in the private subnet spaces. I set up the Quick Create tool with the minimum volume size, single AZ, selected the VPC and primary private subnet, but when I try and create the volume, I get the spinny icon for a while and then the orange "create" button just lights up again.

I have a Cloudtrail enabled for my test account but its only information is:

"errorCode": "InternalFailure",
"errorMessage": "An unknown error occurred",

This doesn't really give me any information to go on. I tried deleting and completely recreating the VPC and all its sub-elements but got the exact same error. Any ideas why?

edit note: on the offhand chance this was some kind of temporary error in my chosen region/AZ, I tried this twice a couple of days apart, and got the same behavior both times.

  • I figured out an additional detail about this: when creating multi-AZ filesystems, it works fine; it's only when creating single AZ filesystems that it fails. This crosses multiple accounts, and appears to be a shortcoming of the service itself even though it's undocumented, and the documentation claims that single-AZ is fully supported.
