Spot Fleet step scaling not working based off alarm using math metric

Hello, I tried to setup auto scaling for a Spot fleet using the policy type of step scaling. I had already created a Cloudwatch Alarm that uses a math metric to have the scaling based off of. When I set the policy trigger to use the Alarm based on the math metric I received an error saying there was no Metric Name supplied. It looks like from the article below that this was fixed for ec2 auto scaling about a year ago. Is there any chance this is supported for Spot Fleets as well and I am just missing a step?
