Connection timeouts during automated snapshots of SQL server instance

We're seeing connection timeouts almost every time an automated backup/snapshot is performed on out SQL server instance. Does anyone know why this occurs and is there any configuration changes that might alleviate the issue?

The timing of the IO suspension mentioned here matches the timing of the errors we're seeing.
