Account stuck in root organization

0

I want to add a new account to our existing organization.

However, when inviting it I receive the invitation but I cannot accept it. The organization seems to be stuck as only account in a root organization. Can I remove the account from this organization? Or close the organization? Or can I do something else to accept the invite?

Thank you.

Based on your description, it sounds like you're trying to move an account from one AWS Organization to another, but you're encountering issues with the invitation process.

To resolve this situation, you need to understand that an AWS account cannot be a member of two organizations simultaneously. If your account is currently the management account (root account) of an organization, it cannot accept invitations to join another organization.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. If the account is currently a management account of an organization:
  • You'll need to remove all member accounts from your current organization first
  • Then delete the organization itself
  • Only then can the account accept an invitation to join another organization
  1. If the account is not a management account but still part of an organization:
  • The account must first leave its current organization before it can accept the invitation
  • This requires the account to have valid billing information and payment method, as it will briefly become a standalone account during the transition

The process of moving between organizations requires the account to temporarily become a standalone account. During this transition period, the account must have valid payment information to cover any charges that might be incurred.

If you're unable to add billing details due to governance requirements, this presents a challenge, as AWS requires accounts to have a valid payment method when not part of an organization.

For the most efficient transition, try to coordinate the process to minimize the time the account spends as a standalone account. Ideally, complete the migration quickly by ensuring the invitation to the new organization is ready to be accepted immediately after leaving the current one.

If you continue to face issues, contacting AWS Support might be necessary as they can provide guidance specific to your situation.
