Lambda triggers and Time to Live (TTL)

I combine Time to Live with DynamoDB streams to invoke a lambda trigger, only when the item is deleted by TTL and not by a user or console.
According to the docs, you should be able to distinguish TTL-deleted records from others by using the userIdentity field.
However, my records never have this field.
Does anyone have an idea what I could be doing wrong?
