Downsize ebs for windows

0

What's the best way to downsize the volume attached to a windows EC2? I know you can't go to modify and select a smaller size. But could you setup a new volume and just copy everything over, then attached that as the primary volume? Or is there something else that can be done?

  • both options are valid it depends how you want to proceed. However for windows recommendation would be to create a new volume and copy everything over.

As you've stated, you can only increase the size of EBS volumes in-place, not shrink them. You will have to do as you've stated, copy the data over and then use that as the primary volume. You could even attach both volumes (smaller and larger one) to the same instance and copy from one drive to the other.
