Creating alerts for failed Windows Updates on RDS instances

I reviewed your query and I understand that you want to create an email alert when the patching via Systems Manager fails on the RDS instances.

a) If you are patching the instance with Run Command, you could utilise the steps suggested in Sending a Run Command that returns notifications (console).

• Utilise Task 1, Task 2 and Task 3 of Monitoring Systems Manager status changes using Amazon SNS notifications to create, subscribe for SNS Topic and to create the required IAM role.
• The steps 10 - 14 clearly outline the usage of SNS notification with Run Command.
• In the Event Notifications section choose Failed for getting notified for Failures only.

b) If you are looking to patch the instances with Maintenance Window, kindly follow How do I better manage notifications for patching in Systems Manager? which outlines the required steps; for you to receive the notification on failure.
