Hello there
I see that both instance were on same hardware and that hardware had some issue. Our automated system detected it and moved your instance to new hardware in the backend. This process is reflected as a reboot at your end.
Please accept my apologies on behalf of AWS for the inconvenience caused. AWS works hard to minimize failures, but unfortunately sometimes failures are very hard to predict as electronics have a life-cycle and will fail when you least expect it. I want to assure you that we make every commercially available effort to make sure Amazon Web Services is secure and resilient to provide you high reliability and massive scale. However, hardware and network failures do inevitably occur in every environment. We try our best to restrict the downtime caused by such failures to be very brief. As said earlier, as the hardware failure is inevitable therefore, I would advise you to think in path to make AWS architecture more fault tolerant.
You may look into the following best practices to create a fault-tolerant application so as to make your instance more robust
- Auto Recovery for Amazon EC2 --> http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/ec2-instance-recover.html
- Run instances in two or more Availability Zones --> http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-regions-availability-zones.html
- Use Chaos Monkey to induce various kinds of failures in a controlled environment. --> https://github.com/Netflix/SimianArmy/wiki/Chaos-Monkey
- Examine and consider expanding your use of Amazon Route 53 --> https://aws.amazon.com/route53/
- Use Elastic Load Balancing checks to ensure that web traffic is routed to healthy instances. --> https://aws.amazon.com/elasticloadbalancing
- Use Auto Scaling to keep a defined number of healthy instances up and running. --> https://aws.amazon.com/autoscaling/
