How to properly configure AWS Workmail in bounce case

0

Hello, I am configuring an AWS Workmail and it is more complex than I thought. Sending and retrieving E-Mails works so far. If I send an E-Mail from my AWS Workmail user Account to an E-Mail that does not exists e.g. info@blablathisdomaindoesnotexists.com then my E-Mail client sends the E-Mail normally and after approximately 24 hours I get an E-Mail from amazonses.com with the header: "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" and some Informations in the body.

How can the user who sends the E-Mail get direct feedback if the E-Mail will bounce/fail to deliver?

If I send an E-Mail with my hello123@gmail.com email to a non existing email like asdfasdf@gmailasdfhsadfjkwerushdfjskhdf.de I get an Email after 2 seconds direct that has the content:

DNS Error: DNS type 'mx' lookup of gmailasdfhsadfjkwerushdfjskhdf.de responded with code NXDOMAIN Domain name not found: gmailasdfhsadfjkwerushdfjskhdf.de Learn more at https://support.google.com/mail/?p=BadRcptDomain

Why isn't there a tutorial that covers this case?

If I go SES -> Reputation metrics -> Bounce Rate it says that I have a Historic bounce rate of 0,00% . Why 0,00% ? I send E-mails in the past that couldn't be delivered.

Hi,

When sending mail to invalid/non-existing email addresses, the bounce messages come the receiving server (if there is one). If you send an email to a valid domain with an invalid/non-existing user, the receiving server (like Gmail in your test) will reply quickly informing you that the email does not match an existing user. When you send an mail to an invalid/non-existing domain the sending server will try to deliver the mail for some time. This to cover the case that the receiving mail server is down for some reason. The sending server will give up after some time and return a bounce to the sending user.

For the SES statistics, when using WorkMail mail is sent via the WorkMail account so not statistics will not show up in your account.

Kind regards, Robin

  • How can I reduce/adjust the time the server will try to deliver the mail?

  • This value cannot be configured for WorkMail. When attempting to deliver an email, Amazon WorkMail via SES will continue making delivery attempts until receiving a successful response, or until 840 minutes (14 hours) elapse.
