RDS daily cost increased 3x after upgrading aurora postgresql from 10.13 to 13.4

  1. The cost increased 3x since the day aurora postgresql was upgraded from 10.13 to 13.4 with code and instance type remaining the same.
  2. Buffer Cache hit ratio fluctuates between 85 to 100 over a 1 minute interval.
  3. Read IOPS is between 0 to 8000
  4. Write IOS is between 0 to 1000
  5. CPU usage is under 30%
  6. Freeable memory is around 14000 MB
  7. This is in our dev database. Simulating a load test against the test db didn't make any difference in the above numbers.
  8. Other than the cost increase, performance is acceptable and all works well.
  9. After a few days of cost increase, ran ANALYZE command the 2nd time. Improved buffer cache hit ratio that fluctuates from 85 to 100 (previously it was from 62 to 100 over a 1 minute interval). Still it does not stay close to 100.
  10. shared_buffer_size is about 75% instance size which is the default.
  11. Enabled Performance Insights on this RDS database. Shows some SQL commands like autovacuum: ANALYZE tablename requiring I/O access.
