Source of CloudWatch metrics

In the AWS accounts I am supporting I have a number of custom CloudWatch metrics that I'm unable to identify how they are being populated, i.e. where the source of the put-metric-data is coming from. How can I identify the user/service/resource that is posting data to CloudWatch?

Given the name CloudTrailMetrics, I assume that metrics are registered from CloudTrail logs sent to CloudWatch Logs using a metric filter.
