Advice on upskilling into AWS developmeny

0

Hi I am a former software developer who is looking to re-enter the industry as an AWS developer after a significant career break. I have a MSc in object oriented software engineering and around 8yrs experience in software application development and support roles (mainly java). I am looking for advice on how to go about this and what options are available to me here. I have looked at training program provided by AWS Institute but not sure if I meet the eligibility criteria. I understand there is also a re/start program covering the fundamentals of AWS services and cloud computing that is aimed at unemployed/underemployed who are looking to enter this field but I can't find any providers offering this in my part of the world. Any advice on my available options would be greatly appreciated. Also what funding options or financial assistance is available. Many thanks

Your background in software development and interest in transitioning to AWS development is a great starting point. There are several paths you can take to upskill and re-enter the industry as an AWS developer:

  1. AWS Cloud Institute: This virtual cloud-skills training program is designed to help individuals launch a career as a cloud developer in about a year, regardless of their technical background. While you're unsure about meeting the eligibility criteria, it's worth exploring further as it offers a comprehensive curriculum including 12 digital training courses, 100 interactive labs, two capstone projects, and preparation for AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and AWS Certified Developer – Associate certifications.

  2. Self-paced learning: Utilize free resources provided by AWS, such as:

    • AWS Skill Builder: Offers 600+ free digital learning courses and resources.
    • AWS Workshops: Free, self-guided tutorial experiences that provide hands-on practice with AWS services.
    • AWS Whitepapers and Guides: In-depth content on various AWS topics.
  3. AWS Certifications: Consider pursuing AWS certifications, starting with AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and then moving on to AWS Certified Developer – Associate. These certifications can validate your skills and make you more attractive to potential employers.

  4. Networking and mentorship: Join AWS-related communities and networking groups. Programs like CloudUp for Her or Become a Solutions Architect (BeSA) mentoring program can provide valuable guidance and support.

  5. Hands-on practice: Set up a free tier AWS account and start working on personal projects to gain practical experience with AWS services.

Regarding financial assistance, while specific funding options aren't mentioned in the provided sources, it's worth exploring:

  • Scholarships or grants offered by AWS or partner organizations
  • Employer-sponsored training if you're currently employed
  • Local government or non-profit programs supporting career transitions in technology

Remember, continuous learning and hands-on practice are key to successfully transitioning into AWS development. Your previous software development experience will be a valuable asset in this journey. Don't hesitate to reach out to AWS directly or connect with AWS professionals through networking events or online communities for more personalized advice and potential opportunities.
