can't transfer a file via sftp to lightsale wordpress instance

I'm able connect to my instance on Lightsail with Wordpress installed, with FileZilla following the standard guidelines. When I try and upload a file to /bitnami/wordpress/wp-content/ai1wm-backups it just returns the message 'could not start transfer' and doesn't upload whatever size the file is.

I have changed the permissions for the folder to 755 but didn't make a difference.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

    Is ai1wm-backups a folder and does it already exist?

    One suggestion I would make is to try uploading to the bitnami home directory (e.g. scp file bitnami@<yourip>:) and then moving the file from there.
