Huge unexpected bill from Route 53 Global Resolver Free Trial - $6,069 in one month

-1

I activated the Route 53 Global Resolver free trial in early March 2026 when it launched. I am a solo developer and only use AWS for basic DNS hosting. My normal monthly bill is $0.50. I never configured or used the service. I assumed the free trial meant the service would stop when the trial credit was exhausted. Instead it kept running silently with no notification, no email, no console alert. The $840 free trial credit was consumed within days. By end of March I had a $6,069 bill — all from Route 53 Global Resolver. April added another $442 before I deleted it. I have two open support tickets since April 2nd — both still showing Unassigned after 6 days. No response. Has anyone experienced the same? How long did it take to get a response from AWS support?

I understand your frustration with this unexpected billing situation. Based on the Route 53 Global Resolver pricing structure, I can help explain what likely happened.

The free trial for Route 53 Global Resolver covers the first two regions with DNS filtering enabled and up to 1 billion queries for 30 days. However, the service uses a two-part pricing model that continues charging after the trial period ends:

  1. Regional hourly charges: Two regions with DNS filtering cost $5.00/hour (approximately $3,600/month for a 30-day month). Additional regions cost $1.50/hour each with filtering.

  2. Query volume charges: After the first 1 billion queries (included in the trial), charges are $1.50 per million queries.

The service does not automatically stop when the free trial ends or when trial credits are exhausted - it continues running and accruing charges. This is standard behavior for AWS services after free trial periods expire. The service would need to be manually disabled or deleted to stop charges.

For your support tickets, response times can vary depending on your support plan level. If you haven't received a response after 6 days and have an urgent billing concern, you may want to:

  • Check your support plan level and expected response times
  • Consider escalating through your account team if you have one
  • Ensure your tickets are properly categorized as billing issues
  • Try reaching out through the AWS billing console directly

For billing disputes or unexpected charges, AWS does review cases individually, especially when services were not intentionally configured or used. Make sure to clearly document that you never actively configured or used the service beyond activating the trial.

Hello.

Based on the responses at the following URL, it appears that inquiries to AWS support regarding billing take a considerable amount of time to receive a response.
I have also contacted AWS support in the past with questions regarding billing, and even for a simple response, I had to wait about three days.
