Backup a NAS directly to S3 DeepArchive (secondary backup)

0

I want to back up a NAS to the cheapest option possible (will only access to it if my primary local backup also fails), my NAS (Synology with DSM7) have a client for S3. What's the cheapest, an easy way to store it directly without the need to set up complex lifecycle rules? Thanks!

I have a Synology and I backup to a glacier vault. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/amazonglacier/latest/dev/working-with-vaults.html

I use the Glacier Backup software available via Package Centre https://kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/help/GlacierBackup/help?version=7

Note, you wil not be able to see your files in S3 using this way but will have the ability to perform a restore.

Update

Hyper backup to S3 doesn’t support the glacier tier.

Moving backed up files from Amazon S3 to Amazon Glacier is not supported. If files are moved from Amazon S3 to Amazon Glacier via the AWS Management console, the related backup tasks might fail.

These are supported.

Storage class supports S3 Storage Standard, Amazon S3 RRS (Reduced Redundancy Storage), S3 Storage Standard - Infrequent Access (Standard - IA), Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering, and Amazon S3 One Zone - Infrequent Access:

  • Great thanks, but Glacier Vault cost is higher than DeepArchive?

  • Im still trying to find that definiate answer.. However, to add to the answer. You would have to setup lifecycle rules or the easier Intelligent-Tiering Archive configurations on the properties tab of the S3 bucket configuration

I tried to just change the storage class to Deep archive for the main folder *Server.hbk *on the Bucket and I feel that this broke the backup system... Should I leave the main Folder without the Deep Archive and setup the lifecycle inside it?

Never done any lifecycle setup before, so any guide will help :-)

Thanks

  • I’m wondering if the backup S3 software doesn’t support lifecycles. I’ve only used the vault

  • Found this on Synology site.
