AWS Statmux Audio Program

Hi. I'd like to confirm that Elemental Live Statmux cannot include audio only channels/programs, ie a radio channel.

Hello Max,

I think your proposed use case is technically possible, but it may not be the optimal solution for a single radio channel. You might try Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS). I'll explain: AWS Elemental Live is designed to process video input, and while it does support audio encoding within these video streams, it doesn't explicitly support audio-only channels or programs like a radio channel. However, it is technically possible to create an "audio-only video" stream where the video component is just a static image or a black screen, but that may not be the most efficient or cost-effective approach for audio-only streaming.

That said, why not set up an IVS channel to stream an audio only broadcast? Set it up to show a static image or a black screen, as in the example above. IVS would allow you to easily set up live streams that you can save for playback later as VOD, or in our case, as an internet radio broadcast on demand.

Here are some documents to help you set this up: Get started creating an Amazon IVS channel

  • Thank you for your response, you've answered my question. I would be looking at an MPTS with both video/audio programs and audio only programs which it cannot do. Thanks again.

Hello Max,

Medialive Statmux is better used for the encoding of MPTS with video and audio programs because it will apply QVBR rate control to the video to maintain the best Video Quality allowing you to add further video and audio programs to the MPTS. With that said you can add audio only programs downstream of MediaLive Statmux allowing you better flexibility and bandwidth usage.
