When are Amazon DocumentDB connections created and disposed?

I have an Elastic Beanstalk app connected to an AWS DocumentDB cluster with only two instances at the moment. Yet, there are currently about 140 connections to the primary instance, as displayed in the admin:

Why so many connections? What does a single connection mean? When is it created, when is it disposed?
