Modes for Database Insights & Pricing:

Database Insights has an Advanced mode and a Standard mode. Standard mode is the default for Database Insights, and you can turn on the Advanced mode for your database for an additional cost of $0.0125 per vCPU/ACU-hour per instance for RDS and Aurora Provisioned.

The table in the link below[1] shows which features CloudWatch supports for the Advanced mode and Standard mode of Database Insights. [1] https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonCloudWatch/latest/monitoring/Database-Insights.html

Impact of the Deprecation: There is no impact to keep using 7 days retention with Standard Mode.

  • If you are currently a Performance Insights customer (either on the free tier or paid tier), you will automatically become a Database Insights Standard customer after November 30th, 2025, unless you have explicitly opted-in for the Database Insights Advanced mode.

  • For a Performance Insights paid tier customer with a retention period of more than 7 days and do not upgrade to the Database Insights Advanced mode, you will lose access to performance data history beyond 7 days, as the Standard mode provides only 7 days of retention. The same behavior applies to your RDS and Aurora databases.

CloudWatch Database Insights offers two distinct operating modes: Standard and Advanced.

Standard Mode (Default):

  • 7-day metric retention
  • Basic DB load analysis capabilities
  • Basic monitoring features
  • Query and graphing capabilities
  • Fine-grained access control

Advanced Mode:

  • 15-month metric retention (compared to 7 days in Standard)
  • Enhanced monitoring capabilities
  • Operating system process analysis
  • Fleet-wide monitoring views for managing multiple databases
  • SQL analysis tools
  • Integration with CloudWatch Application Signals
  • SQL execution plans (for Aurora PostgreSQL, RDS for Oracle, and RDS for SQL Server)
  • SQL lock analysis (for Aurora PostgreSQL)
  • Per-query statistics visualization

You should consider switching to Advanced mode if:

  1. You need longer data retention (15 months vs 7 days)
  2. You manage multiple databases and want fleet-wide monitoring
  3. You require deeper SQL performance analysis capabilities
  4. You're currently using the paid tier of Performance Insights (which is being deprecated on November 30, 2025)
  5. You need execution plans and on-demand analysis features
