Alternatives to R6a 16vCPU vs 32vCPU?

0

I am pricing out an EC2 instance to host a Tableau server on Windows 2019. The initial thought was an R6a.4xlarge with 16vCPUs, 128GB RAM as it's memory optimized. Our current 8 core on-prem server is at capacity and this build will give us more compute power to handle the growing workload. Vizes are loading slow and extracts taking too long.

My other option is to purchase additional capacity from Tableau that will create options are architecture flexibility. The biggest workloads would be running the data extracts in the early mornings, and the user workload is pretty consistent throughout the work day and the year. There will be traffic from publicly facing dashboards on the website and a couple thousand internal users viewing dashboards.

Is there another type of instance that would host 32vCPUs and 128GB RAM for cheaper than that R6a.xlarge? I'm worried the R6a could be overkill and not give me the additional growth capacity needed without still having to buy more capacity from Tableau.

Hello,

There is no instance type with 32vCPUs and 128GB RAM cheaper than R6a.4xlarge on-demand.

You can stop your instance when there are no customer connected, then change instance type and family to see if another will give you a better result with you Tableau application. That's the good side of cloud computing, you can try quite easily a new set of options (RAM/CPU/IOPS) to see if it can improve the customer experience.
