However, the consensus is that it's not worth the effort compared to much better paid offerings like you mentioned above. DIY email servers will likely forward legitimate emails to spam folders and cause a huge headache for you. I would recommend you check out Google Workspace, which is only $6/month for the starter and easy to configure. https://workspace.google.com/pricing.html
In addition to email benefits you will get access to other Google products like Drive, Docs, and Sheets. I know this is probably not the answer you were looking for, but I hope it still helps you.
