Hello Edward,
To close your AWS account (which includes S3 and all other AWS services), you need to follow these steps:
-
Sign in to the AWS Management Console as the root user of your account. It's important to note that you cannot close an account while signed in as an IAM user or role.
-
Once logged in, look at the navigation bar in the upper-right corner. Click on your account name or number, and then select "Account".
-
On the Account page, scroll down until you find the "Close account" button.
-
Click on the "Close account" button. You'll be presented with a closure dialog box.
-
To confirm that you understand the account closure process, you'll need to type in your account ID. This ID will be displayed at the top of the closure dialog box.
-
After entering your account ID, click the "Close account" button again to start the account closure process.
-
Within a few minutes, you should receive an email confirming that your account has been closed.
It's important to understand that closing your account will terminate access to all AWS services, not just S3. Also, you don't need to manually delete your S3 resources before closing the account, but it's recommended to back up any data you want to keep.
Please note that after closure, your account enters a 90-day post-closure period. During this time, you can reopen the account if needed by contacting AWS Support. After 90 days, the account will be permanently closed.
Lastly, be aware that any charges for services used before closure will continue to accrue and will be billed the following month. Make sure to settle any outstanding balances to avoid any issues.
