Support of m8g and m9g instances in AWS MSK

0

Hi there,

As far as I understand, MSK doesn’t support the 8th- or 9th-generation Graviton processors yet. What is the timeline for support of these instances on the AWS side?

Based on the available information, AWS has not announced a specific timeline for supporting m8g or m9g instances (Graviton4 or later processors) in Amazon MSK.

Currently, Amazon MSK supports Graviton3-based M7g instances for Standard brokers in various regions. These M7g instances offer up to 24% compute cost savings and up to 29% higher write and read throughput compared to MSK clusters running on M5 instances. AWS has been gradually expanding M7g instance support across different regions, with recent additions including Europe (Paris) in December 2024 and eight additional regions in August 2025 (including AWS GovCloud regions, Asia Pacific regions, Europe (Zurich), and Israel).

While AWS does have m8g instances available in EC2 (powered by AWS Graviton4 Processors), there is no public information about when these newer generation instances will be supported in Amazon MSK. AWS typically announces support for new instance types through their AWS What's New page, MSK documentation, or release notes. To get the most up-to-date information about upcoming instance type support, you may want to monitor these official channels or engage with AWS Support.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting AWS Premium Support. I appreciate you reaching out with your questions about availability of 8th or 9th generation Graviton processors. Based on my analysis, I can provide you with some clarity on your migration concerns.

Currently as checked with my team internally, there is no publicly announced timeline for when Amazon Managed Streaming Kafka will support 8th or 9th generation Graviton processors in MSK. I understand this may be frustrating given your need, but I want to be transparent about what we know and what options are available to you.

Second, I recommend checking the AWS MSK Service resources page regularly for announcements, as AWS typically announces major version support updates there first.
