Whitepaper - Establishing Your Cloud Foundation on AWS

0

Hello,

I am an aws cloud engineer currently trying to understand the Whitepaper "Establishing Your Cloud Foundation on AWS". But it is very abstract for a whitepaper that is designed for customers without clue from aws.

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/whitepapers/latest/establishing-your-cloud-foundation-on-aws/welcome.html

There are just some general abstract explanations and then we have 29 capabilities explained on a high level in the whitepaper but in the section "working with capabilities" there are only 9 of these 29 capabilities explained in deeper detail. What about the other 20? Why is there not Information for all capabilities.

Let's take the Governance capability as an example:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/whitepapers/latest/establishing-your-cloud-foundation-on-aws/governance-capability.html

We have some Information about stakeholders and personas and scenarios, but where do I find Information about the Scenarios? If I google for scenario "CF26 - S1: Cloud service provider relationship" I do actually find a link to some picture explaining s1 - s5:

https://d1.awsstatic.com/solutions/guidance/architecture-diagrams/governance-on-aws.pdf

But I don't find anything for "CF26 - S6: Compliance management". That is the same behaviour for some of the other capabilities that are explained in more detail.

In general I am kinda missing the "How can a business use this whitepaper to it's advantage and how to use it at all"?

Should they check out each capability like tagging and hold a meeting with all stakeholders and then discuss the scenarios that are not explained in this scenario?

Thanks in advance for you helping me understanding this whitepaper.

Sincerely Heiko

The whitepaper "Establishing Your Cloud Foundation on AWS" is designed to provide a high-level framework for organizations to build their cloud foundation. While it may seem abstract, its purpose is to offer a starting point for discussions and planning rather than providing detailed implementation instructions.

The whitepaper introduces 29 capabilities, but only elaborates on 9 of them in more detail. This approach is likely intended to give readers a sense of how the capabilities are structured without overwhelming them with excessive information. The focus on these 9 capabilities may be because they are considered the most fundamental or commonly applicable across various organizations.

Regarding the Governance capability and its scenarios, you're correct that the whitepaper itself doesn't provide detailed information about each scenario. The PDF you found with the architecture diagrams is a supplementary resource that AWS provides to give more context to some of the scenarios. However, not all scenarios have corresponding detailed explanations or diagrams publicly available.

The primary purpose of this whitepaper is to serve as a guide for businesses to initiate conversations and planning around their cloud foundation. It's not meant to be a comprehensive, step-by-step manual. Instead, it's designed to help organizations:

  1. Identify key areas (capabilities) they need to consider when establishing their cloud foundation.
  2. Recognize the relevant stakeholders for each capability.
  3. Understand potential scenarios they might encounter.
  4. Start discussions about how to approach these capabilities in their specific context.

To use this whitepaper effectively, businesses should:

  1. Review the list of capabilities and prioritize them based on their specific needs and goals.
  2. For each relevant capability, identify the stakeholders within their organization.
  3. Use the scenarios provided as discussion points in meetings with these stakeholders.
  4. Even for scenarios not fully explained, use them as prompts to consider how they might apply to the organization's specific situation.
  5. Create an implementation plan based on these discussions, focusing on the most critical capabilities first.

While the whitepaper may not provide all the answers, it serves as a valuable starting point for organizations to structure their approach to building a cloud foundation. It encourages businesses to think holistically about their cloud strategy and ensures they consider various aspects beyond just technical implementation.
