SMTP messages are failing intermittently

0

I inherited a Drupal 7 site running Open Atrium and the sending of email messages is failing intermittently. 1 out of every 10 emails fails the with unable-to-authenticate error message. How are most emails working then? I've updated the email config to Signature Version 4.

Site is running on Pantheon and hasn't been updated in over a year. Using TLS and SMTP port is 587.

Drupal 7.78
PHP 7.3
SMTP module - 7.x-1.7

Started working after I changed the From: email to a verified AWS email address.
