In AWS Blu Age, the handling of EBCDIC to ASCII conversion is managed at the program configuration level. AWS Blu Age generates a configuration class for each program that allows for custom behavior specification on a program-by-program basis. This means that within a single application, you can have one program processing ASCII data and another program processing EBCDIC data.
When migrating mainframe data to AWS Blu Age, the conversion from EBCDIC to ASCII isn't automatically handled by the Java code itself. Instead, you need to specify how each program should handle the data encoding through its configuration class. The modernized Java application can be configured to work with either EBCDIC or ASCII data depending on your requirements.
If you're receiving unloaded EBCDIC data from the mainframe, you have a few options:
- Configure the relevant programs in AWS Blu Age to process EBCDIC data directly
- Convert the EBCDIC data to ASCII before processing using separate conversion utilities
For the second approach, AWS offers several methods to convert EBCDIC to ASCII, including using Python scripts with the mainframe-data-utilities GitHub repository, Micro Focus tools for complex record layouts, or AWS Lambda functions that can automatically convert files when they're uploaded to Amazon S3.
