EC2 instance does not start

Hi all, I have an istance that pass first ceck but fails second check that is unable to start, I cannot connect via ssh and it's not responding.

What can I do?

Error in log is:

fsck not present, so skipping root file system

I am getting this error too. cloud-init is failing and no IP address is being assigned hence reachability failture. Multiple failures in 24 hours. This problem also has forum threads in 2014 and 2016 for the same problem. Error was on AWS side.

Hi There,
checking the logs the instance type seem to be m5.large which is a nitro based instance.
DMI: Amazon EC2 m5.large/, BIOS 1.0 10/16/2017

The error seems to be happening due to:
[ TIME https://forums.aws.amazon.com/ Timed out waiting for device dev-xvdb.device.
[DEPENDhttps://forums.aws.amazon.com/ Dependency failed for /docker_scratch.

It looks like the issue is with the /etc/fstab.
In case of Nitro Instances, the EBS volumes are exposed as nvme devices so the device names are of format: /dev/nvme[DiskNo]n1p[PartitionNo]
The device name /dev/xvd[letters] only works with xen based instances

Moreover, it is recommended to make use of UUID or FS Label to mount the device using /etc/fstab.

So correcting the entry by replacing device name with its UUID should help in this.
Also, before changing the instance type from xen to nitro, it is recommended to run the following script on the instance to validate drivers and fstab entries:
