I understand your concern about the unexpected charge on your AWS account, especially as a student who didn't use the instance in the past month. While I can't guarantee a refund, here are the steps you can take to address this issue:
-
First, immediately delete all resources you're not using to prevent further charges.
-
Contact AWS Billing Support directly by opening a support case under "Account and Billing" in the AWS Support Center. This type of support is free of charge.
-
When creating the support case, provide detailed information about your situation. Explain that you're a student, didn't use the instance in the past month, and were unaware of the charges. Include the specific amount ($50 USD for March 2025) and any relevant information about your student status.
-
Request a review of your account usage and charges, and politely ask if a refund is possible given your circumstances.
-
For future reference, familiarize yourself with the AWS Free Tier and its limitations. Also, consider using the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate costs before using services.
-
Set up budget alerts to notify you when your usage approaches a certain threshold to avoid unexpected charges in the future.
Remember, while AWS does offer a Free Tier for many services, some usage may still incur charges. It's always important to monitor your usage and understand the pricing for the services you're using, even if you're not actively using them. AWS Support will review your request and guide you through the process, but keep in mind that refunds are not guaranteed and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Hi, @Alien Receiving unexpected charge can be very stressful especially as a student. This was my very first experience using AWS management console. I forgot to stop some services after using them and i was landed a heavy bill at the end of the month. But don't worry because AWS has a billing disputes and possible refund policy especially for students and first time billing issues.
You can open a billing support case through the AWS Support Centre using this link https://support.aws.amazon.com/ and clearly mention that you are a student and the charge was unexpected. Trust me AWS is usually understanding in such cases and there is a good chance they may offer a refund.
Besides this, i will advise you set a billing alarm in your account to avoid unexpected charges in the future. Also go through your AWS management console and stop any running resources to avoid further charges.
