AWS Lightsail WordPress IPV6

0

Hi When I login to my AWS account I see a notification stating if continue using IPV4 on an instance, the price will increase and thee is an option of using IPV6.

From my understanding IPV6 value can be placed on DNS zone of a domain and can point to the WordPress site for example as an "AAAA" record replacing IPV4 value as "A" record.

I therefor have placed the IPV6 on as "AAAA" on my domain DNS manager which is handled by "Microsoft 365" and I can see this resolved using online tools. But when trying to access the domain in browser nothing comes up of it does not go to WordPress site.

I have checked the Instance and if IPV^ is active, I have renewed it and used the new IPV6 and allowed for propagation time, but it does not work.

Am I missing something, or did not understand how it is spose to work. Could someone here help please, the date is very near and need to do this on few sites.

Hello.

I'm not sure what you're using for your WordPress web server, but is it configured to listen to IPv6 on the web server side as per the document below?
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lightsail/latest/userguide/amazon-lightsail-configure-ipv6-on-nginx.html

Also, does your ISP support IPv6?
If the access source does not support IPv6, I don't think you can access Lightsail using IPv6.

  • When you say "ISP support IPv6?" what does this mean? I have pointed the domain to IPV6 of the LightSail WordPress Instant. I have placed the DNS record at Microsoft where all my DNS records reside.

  • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) connects you to the internet. If you configure your web server to use only IPv6 addresses without setting up IPv4, and your ISP does not support IPv6, you will be unable to access your web server.

  • Effective February 1, 2024, every resource with a Public IPv4 address (NAT Gateway, EC2 Instance, Load balancer, VPN etc.) will be charged $0.005 per IP per hour.

  • Well I am not sure, if my ISP supports IPV6 or not. I am accessing the site using the domain and not IPV6. I was under a impression if I pointed the domain to that IPV6 it would resolve since MS365 DNS Zone allows adding it. It is somewhat pointless to say to users use IPV6 if you do not want the extra cost, but the option is for few how's ISP allows IPV6 to visit that site. It is like saying I give you an app to call the world, but only the ones who have WhatsApp!!!

  • Absolutely, when configuring DNS records for your domain, you have the flexibility to associate it with the IPv4 protocol by creating an A record. Similarly, you can link your domain to the IPv6 protocol by setting up an AAAA record. This dual configuration approach ensures that your domain is accessible over both protocols. While IPv4 is widely supported across virtually all platforms and networks, the adoption of IPv6 is more varied. Not all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) support IPv6, leading to a disparity in connectivity options. By accommodating both IPv4 and IPv6, you ensure broader accessibility and future-proofing of your domain, catering to users regardless of their ISP's protocol support.
