1/ Regarding the core Kubernetes distribution we use EKS Distro that is completely managed by AWS. The below issue only impacts the workloads deployed by customers and they should take care that they are not pulling anything from this registry and we always recommend using Amazon ECR 2/ This blog https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/containers/changes-to-the-kubernetes-container-image-registry/ explains this in context in context of base K8s decision to move to from k8s.gcr.io to the community owned registry, registry.k8s.io.
