What is the difference between endpoint and listener endpoint in RDS for MSSQL? I found both endpoint could connect to MSSQL. Under what scenario then we use listener endpoint?

By the way, we found the endpoint's response is faster than listener endpoint when we telnet both endpoints. What is the mechanisms behind?

Endpoints connect directly to your RDS DB instance, while Listener Endpoint for failover and multi-AZ purpose. That's why as you see endpoint connection always response faster than your DB instance.

  • Does it mean we should always connect to listener endpoint when enabled multi-AZ as listener endpoint seems to be the single entry point of the RDS
