Wanted to see if I can help you :)
- Verify your networking settings allow SSH and FTP access from your IP address. (On Lightsail) - see screenshot!
It looks like by default the SSH port is already allowed, so you might need to add if port 21 if you're using FTP, otherwise you should be able to use SFTP just fine
SSH uses port 22, so you might need to allow that within your default security group tied to the LightSail instance.

When you say old-school, are you using an ec2 instance? If so what operating system?
It is not clear if you you were able to ssh and ftp but then got cut or if you couldn't ever stablish ssh or ftp connections. Do you receive any error messages? Or it just times out?
