Lost my $160 free tier credits after creating AWS org by mistake - please help!

-3

Hey everyone,

I'm really frustrated and hoping someone can help me out here. I'm a student trying to learn AWS and I think I messed up big time.

What happened: So I created my AWS account on June 25th and got the new free tier with $160 in credits ($100 base + $60 from doing those "Explore AWS" tasks). I was super excited to start learning!

But then I was following some tutorial and accidentally created an AWS Organization because I thought I needed it for my project. I had no idea this would kill my free tier! As soon as I realized it wasn't what I needed, I deleted the whole thing.

Now all my credits expired on July 7th (literally just 12 days after I got them) and I've barely used anything - only like $0.22 out of $160! My account now shows "Paid Plan" instead of free tier and the credits are all expired and useless.

I'm so confused because:

I deleted the organization immediately I barely used any services This was clearly a newbie mistake AWS Organizations is supposed to be free, so why did it kill my credits? Has anyone been through this? I've seen other posts like "Lost 199$ credits due to aws org" and people having the same issue, but I can't find anyone who actually got their credits back.

I really need these credits to continue learning AWS. As a student, I can't afford to pay for services while I'm just trying to figure out how things work.

Questions:

Has anyone successfully gotten their free tier restored after this? Should I contact AWS support? Will they actually help? Is there anything specific I should say to get them to understand this was an accident? This is really stressing me out because I was so excited to learn AWS and now I'm stuck. Any help or advice would be amazing!

Thanks guys

I understand how frustrating this situation must be, especially as a student trying to learn AWS. Let me clarify what happened and how you can address it.

When you create an AWS Organization, your account becomes the management account. At that point, AWS promotional credits (like the $160 you received) can no longer be applied to the management account - they become unavailable even if you delete the organization afterward. This is a known limitation of how promotional credits work with AWS Organizations.

The good news is that your 12-month AWS Free Tier benefits are separate from promotional credits and should still be active. The Free Tier provides ongoing access to certain services within usage limits for 12 months from your account creation date (June 25th in your case). This includes services like EC2, S3, RDS, and many others that you can continue using for learning.

For your promotional credits situation, I recommend reaching out through the AWS Support Center at https://console.aws.amazon.com/support/. When you contact them, clearly explain that you accidentally created an organization while following a tutorial, deleted it immediately after realizing the mistake, and had barely used any of the credits. Support teams can review your specific situation and account activity.

While I can't guarantee a specific outcome, AWS Support is there to help customers, especially in cases involving accidental actions by new users who are learning the platform. Be clear, polite, and factual about what happened.

In the meantime, you can continue learning using the 12-month Free Tier benefits, which provide substantial resources for educational purposes without needing the promotional credits.

  • Hello AWS Support Team,

I already created a support case regarding this issue, but I haven't received any response yet. My case ID is ******.

I accidentally created an AWS Organization while learning AWS and deleted it as soon as I realized the mistake. Since then, my promotional credits are no longer available. I'm a student using AWS for learning, and this has been very frustrating.

Could someone please look into my case and advise me? Is there any possibility of restoring my promotional credits or making a one-time exception? If not, what would you recommend I do from here?

I would really appreciate any guidance or help. Thank you.
