Traffic from direct connect gateway

0

Dear Team - As per below blog,

https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/networking-and-content-delivery/influencing-traffic-over-hybrid-networks-using-longest-prefix-match/

Scenario 1: Single Direct Connect Gateway

With a single Direct Connect Gateway, the return traffic can travel directly from the Direct Connect Gateway and then to the Direct Connect in PHX (Path A). Or it can travel to the Direct Connect location in ATL and then back through the MPLS connection (Path B) as shown in Figure 3:

However, as per AWS Direct connect FAQ

Q: If I use an AWS Direct Connect gateway, does my traffic to the desired AWS Region go by way of the associated home AWS Region?

No. When using AWS Direct Connect gateway, your traffic will take the shortest path to and from your AWS Direct Connect location to the destination AWS Region**, regardless of the associated home AWS Region of the AWS Direct Connect location where you are connected.

With the above statement, does the scenario or possible routing mentioned on blog scenario-1 is still valid ?

Thanks team.

The scenario mentioned in the blog is still valid.

The FAQ relates to inbound traffic (from the corporate DC to AWS region). In that case the shortest path is always taken towards the destination AWS region so the traffic isn't necessarily routed through the region where the Direct Connect connection physically resides.

Outbound traffic (from AWS region to corporate DC) can be routed to through either of the Direct Connect connections as mentioned in the section you quoted from the blog.

  • Thanks but AWS direct connect FAQ says, When using AWS Direct Connect gateway, your traffic will take the shortest path to and from your AWS Direct Connect location...which means it is not both way ?

  • i think FAQ needs to be updated with proper wording
