When sending OTP messages to New Zealand using AWS End User Messaging, you don't necessarily need to set up a separate short code, but there are important considerations and potential impacts to be aware of:
-
Shared Pool vs. Dedicated Short Code: Without a dedicated short code for New Zealand, AWS End User Messaging SMS will attempt to send messages using a shared pool of short codes. However, due to local carrier restrictions on shared numbers in New Zealand, deliverability through these shared numbers is on a best-effort basis.
-
Deliverability Impact: Using a shared pool may result in less reliable message delivery compared to using a dedicated short code. This could potentially affect the timely receipt of OTP messages by your New Zealand users.
-
URL Restrictions: If your OTP messages contain URLs, these must be allow-listed through a dedicated short code process for New Zealand. This means that without a dedicated short code, you may face limitations on including links in your messages.
-
Recommendation: AWS strongly recommends procuring a dedicated short code for all traffic being sent to New Zealand to ensure better deliverability and compliance with local regulations.
-
Cross-Country Limitations: It's important to note that short codes can only be used to send messages to recipients in the same country where the short code is based. If you're currently using a short code from another country, it may not be optimal or compliant for sending to New Zealand numbers.
-
Alternative Options: If you decide not to use a dedicated short code for New Zealand, you might consider using a sender ID instead. However, sender ID support and regulations vary by country, so you'd need to verify if this is a viable option for New Zealand.
Given these factors, while it's possible to send messages to New Zealand from your current setup, using a dedicated short code for New Zealand would likely provide better deliverability, compliance, and overall reliability for your OTP service. If New Zealand is a significant market for your service, investing in a dedicated short code would be advisable.

Please note that without a dedicated short code, AWS End User Messaging SMS still attempts to send messages to New Zealand recipients using a shared pool of short codes. Due to local carrier restrictions around shared numbers, deliver-ability over these shared numbers are made on a best-effort basis. Therefore, AWS End User Messaging SMS highly recommends procuring a dedicated short code for all traffic being sent to New Zealand. Messages containing URLs must be allow-listed through the dedicated short code process. For more information on purchasing a short code, please refer to the documentation [+].

New Zealand actually has quite a lot of restrictions that needs to be fulfilled to guarantee delivery. If you are sending critical and/or time sensitive messages, we recommend applying for a dedicated Short Code in New Zealand.

What if the current country is not using a short code but a Sender ID, can we use this one to push the OTP messages to New Zealand? And a specific sender ID is currently not available within New Zealand.
