QuickSight Q Topic: 'Failed to create topic'

0

Hi! Each time I try creating a topic, I get error.

I have a direct query dataset with RLS in use. In QuickSight, I go to 'Topics', click 'New Topic', enter a title and a brief description, ensure the 'generative' box is ticked, and click 'Continue'. I then choose a dataset and click 'Create'. The 'Analysing Dataset' progress bar reaches about 20% then I get an error: "Failed to create topic Initial dataset setup failed. An unknown error occurred (CUSTOMER_DATA_SOURCE_QUERY_FAULT)"

The first dataset I used has previously has a topic created against it successfully. I have also successfully refreshed the topic. But I get the same error when I create a new topic against the same dataset and new topics against other datasets. I checked the datasets and the queries are returning data and the analyses of those datasets are working. The datasets are not large. I've tried both 'Generative' and 'Classic' Q and get the same error.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

To resolve the "Failed to create topic" error in QuickSight Q, there are several potential issues to investigate:

  1. IAM Permissions: Ensure you have the necessary permissions to create Q topics. You need both quicksight:CreateTopic and quicksight:PassDataSet permissions in your IAM policy.

  2. Dataset Ownership: You must be an owner of the underlying dataset before you can create a topic using that dataset. Verify your ownership permissions for the datasets you're trying to use.

  3. RLS Considerations: Since you mentioned your dataset uses Row-Level Security (RLS), this could be affecting the topic creation process. RLS might be restricting access to certain data during the analysis phase.

  4. Direct Query Issues: Direct query datasets sometimes have limitations or connectivity issues that can affect topic creation. The "CUSTOMER_DATA_SOURCE_QUERY_FAULT" error suggests there might be a problem with the query execution against your data source.

As an alternative approach, you could try:

  1. Using the AWS CLI to create the topic instead of the QuickSight UI. This might provide more detailed error information.

  2. Creating a CLI skeleton file with your topic configuration and using the create-topic command:

aws quicksight create-topic --aws-account-id YOUR_ACCOUNT_ID --cli-input-json file://createtopic.json
  1. If a previous topic was created successfully against the same dataset, you might consider using the describe-topic API to get that topic's configuration and use it as a template for creating new topics.

The error "CUSTOMER_DATA_SOURCE_QUERY_FAULT" typically indicates an issue with the underlying query to your data source, so you may also want to check if there are any changes or issues with your data source connection.
