While you have added tags to your EMR Serverless jobs, there are a few important points to consider regarding cost tracking and visibility in Cost Explorer:
-
EMR Serverless does support tagging for job runs. You can add tags when starting a job run using the
StartJobRunAPI. -
However, just because tags are visible in the Tag Editor doesn't necessarily mean they will automatically appear in Cost Explorer. There are additional steps required to make these tags usable for cost allocation.
-
To use your tags for cost tracking, you need to activate them as cost allocation tags. This process can only be done from the management account of your AWS organization. Here's how to do it:
- Sign in to the AWS Billing and Cost Management console
- Navigate to "Cost Allocation Tags" in the sidebar
- Find and select the tags you've applied to your EMR Serverless jobs
- Click "Activate" to enable these tags for cost allocation
-
It's important to note that there may be a delay between activating cost allocation tags and seeing them appear in Cost Explorer. It can take up to 24 hours for newly activated tags to become available.
-
Regarding filtering by resource type in Cost Explorer, the ability to do this is limited. Cost Explorer primarily focuses on high-level AWS services rather than specific resource types within a service.
-
To track job-wise costs more effectively, you might consider using a combination of tagging strategies and AWS Cost and Usage Reports. These reports provide more detailed breakdowns of your AWS spending and can be analyzed using tools like Amazon Athena or your preferred data analysis tool.
-
Additionally, AWS has recently introduced a new feature in AWS Resource Explorer that allows filtering for resources that support tags. While this doesn't directly solve your cost tracking issue, it can help you identify which resources in your account are taggable, which could be useful for broader cost management strategies.
Remember, effective cost tracking often requires a combination of proper tagging, activation of cost allocation tags, and potentially the use of more granular reporting tools beyond just Cost Explorer.

I see the tag is activated in the cost allocation tags and checked after 24 hours but issue is not resolved

I am having the same issue exactly. Tried about everything. EMR serverless submissions are tagged + Cost allocation tags enabled for the tag name, but still nothing to filter by or group by in the cost explorer. Even after days/weeks, Any resolution for this issue?
