Compute Savings Plan

Compute Savings Plan İnformation Instance name=t3.xlarge Savings Plans rate=$0.1592 Savings over On-Demand= 17% On-Demand rate=$0.192 Region= Eu-central-1(Frankfurt) Term= 1 year (no upfront)

Question When I purchased a Compute Savings Plan, I wrote "Savings Plans rate ($0.1592)" in the "Hourly commitment" section. However, I should have written "On-Demand rate ($0.192)". What will happen now? Will my Savings Plan work? By the way, My current total Ec2 expenditure is equivalent to "$0.80" per hour. I bought a lower hourly rate (0.1592) to test it.

Thank you.

You were right in committing $0.1592 - when purchasing Savings Plans, you enter the Savings Plans rate. When SP becomes active - it effectively starts applying the discount towards your on-demand rate (in which case you no longer pay for your on-demand usage, and only pay for the SP usage, provided that the resources are running continuously as the discount works on an hourly basis).

In your case, you will have $0.1592 worth of Savings Plans, and this rate will be covering your running resources automatically. Compute Savings Plans are very flexible.

Note that because Savings Plans are intentionally made in a way that provides you highest possible discount, in case you have other EC2 instances running (in addition to your t3.xlarge) then your discount might be applying to other instances first (if they get higher % savings).

May I ask one last question?

I bought SP to cover a "t3.xlarge" instance. I now have 8 "t3.xlarge" instances. And all the instances are automatically going to stop after working hours. So the instances only work half of the day. In this case, can one SP cover 2 instances (12 hours + 12hours = 24 hours) or is it only based on hourly usage? Should I stop putting instances on stop?

Savings Plans are applied to usage every hour. Any unused benefits will not be carried over to the next hour. Utilization is calculated based on how Savings Plans applied to usage over a look back period. Coverage is calculated based on how much eligible spend was covered by Savings Plans. The Savings Plans are applied to the qualifying usage in the account that owns it, starting with the usage that receives the highest effective discount. If another <workload/project/instance> provides a higher discount, AWS will apply the Savings Plans to that usage. Once all usage in the account that owns the Savings Plans is covered, it will be applied to other accounts in the AWS organization. If these instances are not utilized during off hours, it's best to turn them off instead of paying for those hours despite you are getting discounted price! The calculations will be applied to provide maximum discount based on your usage. You could certainly view this in Cost Explorer for these instances and understand how these Savings Plans are applied.
