When you delete an SNS topic before deleting its subscriptions, the subscriptions enter a "Deleted" status but aren't immediately removed from your account. This is a common issue that can occur in two scenarios:
- When a member of an SNS topic mailing list selects the unsubscribe link in an email
- When an Amazon SQS queue in another AWS account that's subscribed to the topic deletes the cross-account subscription
For subscriptions in the "Deleted" status, you cannot manually remove them. Amazon SNS will automatically remove these subscriptions after two days (48 hours). You'll need to wait for this automatic cleanup process to complete.
If you're referring to CloudWatch Logs subscription filters (which are different from SNS subscriptions), you can delete those using the DeleteSubscriptionFilter API. This would require specifying both the filter name and the log group name in your request.
Unfortunately, there's no way to force immediate deletion of SNS subscriptions that are already in the "Deleted" status - you'll need to wait for the automatic cleanup to occur.
