Change to AWS Elemental MediaConvert

0

We currently provide a service that converts videos and applies screenshots through AWS Elemental MediaConvert. As mentioned in the email, we would like to confirm whether the service update has been applied or not. If it has not been applied yet, could you please let us know when it will be implemented?

Hello,

We are writing to inform you of an upcoming change to AWS Elemental MediaConvert that will be released next month. If you do not use AWS Elemental MediaConvert then no further action is needed.

Default values for several transcoding settings will be updated for jobs using the H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC) video codecs in order to improve video output quality. These changes take advantage of recent improvements to the AWS Elemental MediaConvert video processing engine when using the default values, but can be overridden if you specify different values in the job settings. The updated default values do not have any billing implications over the previous default values.

The following default settings are being changed:

  • H.264 - AVC

  • "Profile" - Main → High

  • "Quality tuning level" - Single Pass → Single Pass HQ

  • "GOP Reference B-Frame" - Disabled → Enabled

  • "Dynamic Sub-GOP" - Static → Adaptive

  • H.265 - HEVC

  • "GOP reference B-Frame" - Disabled → Enabled

  • "Dynamic Sub-GOP" - Static → Adaptive

  • "B frames between reference frames" - 2 → Auto

You are being contacted because one or more AWS Elemental MediaConvert jobs that you ran in your AWS account in 2023 used default job setting values for H.264 or H.265. Action may not be required as new H.264 and H.265 jobs will use the new default values and will benefit from an improvement in video quality with no increase in transcoding price. If you need to recreate outputs exactly as they were created before this change, the previous default values will need to be explicitly specified in jobs moving forward.

The Default Settings changes, referenced for AWS Elemental MediaConvert, have been deployed in all AWS Regions offering MediaConvert.

MediaConvert Templates and Jobs that previously used those defaults may be affected. Those that specifically set those parameter values should continue to run as before these updates. Please validate any Templates or reused Job jsons to determine they match application needs.
