an inquiry regarding Amazon Q Developer CLI fees

0

Hi,

This is an inquiry regarding Amazon Q Developer CLI fees.
It concerns “free use with Builder ID” and “use with Pro license.”

I understand that the latter is necessary for questions regarding resources within the AWS account (e.g., cost reduction, troubleshooting, etc.).

Regarding the Amazon Q Developer CLI, is it correct to understand that using the latter will always incur a $19 fee, and that there are operations that can be performed within the $19 limit and operations that are charged on a pay-as-you-go basis? However, in the GUI (Management Console), cost reduction and troubleshooting are free up to a certain number of times, and this relationship is unclear.

For example, for troubleshooting and cost reduction proposals for any AWS account, up to what point are they free in the GUI and CLI, and from what point do they become paid?

What about resource configuration diagram output in draw.io, etc.? Perhaps my instructions are unclear, but since it was not possible in the GUI, I am considering using the CLI with a Pro license. Is this correct?

Best Regards,

Amazon Q Developer offers two pricing tiers: Free Tier and Pro Tier ($19/month per user).

For the CLI specifically, there are basic completions available in the Free Tier, but for advanced features like accessing AWS account context or resources, you would need the Pro Tier subscription. The $19/month Pro Tier fee gives you access to these advanced capabilities without additional per-use charges for most features.

Regarding your specific questions:

  1. The Pro Tier is a flat $19/month fee for most features, not a pay-as-you-go model. However, there is one exception: Amazon Q Developer transformation capability for Java upgrades has a limit of 4,000 lines of code per month (pooled at the account level), with additional usage charged at $0.003 per line of code submitted.

  2. In the Management Console, Amazon Q offers assistance with troubleshooting and cost reduction as part of the standard functionality. The Free Tier includes limited access to these advanced features, while the Pro Tier provides higher usage limits.

  3. For resource configuration diagram outputs in formats like draw.io, this would likely be considered an advanced feature requiring the Pro Tier subscription, especially if it involves analyzing your AWS account resources.

The Pro Tier subscription provides enterprise access controls, customization of Amazon Q to your codebase, and higher limits for advanced features compared to the Free Tier. When deciding between tiers, it's recommended to analyze your specific use cases and user needs rather than defaulting to the higher tier to ensure cost efficiency.
