RDS Postgres version upgrade

0

Hi,

I received a notice to upgrade Postgres to the following versions as below: We recommend that you take action and upgrade [2] your Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL databases running minor versions 13.11 to 13.14, 14.9 to 14.11, 15.4 to 15.6, and 16.1 to 16.2 to versions 13.18, 14.15, 15.10, 16.6, or higher before March 31, 2025 12:01 AM PDT. Alternatively, you can enable Automatic Minor Version Upgrade [3] to allow Amazon RDS to upgrade your instances.

However, my Postgres is on version 14.15, which I understand does not need to be updated, but the problem is that when I enter the "AWS Health Dashboard" it informs me in "Schedule Changes" that my instance is an "Affected Resources".

Would this be normal behavior?

Regards, Guilherme O.

Based on the information provided, it appears that your PostgreSQL instance running version 14.15 does not need to be updated at this time. The notice you received recommends upgrading versions earlier than 14.15, specifically mentioning versions 13.11 to 13.14, 14.9 to 14.11, 15.4 to 15.6, and 16.1 to 16.2. Your current version (14.15) is already at the recommended level for the 14.x series.

The fact that your instance is listed as an "Affected Resource" in the AWS Health Dashboard's "Schedule Changes" section, despite running a version that doesn't require immediate action, could be due to a few reasons:

  1. The Health Dashboard might be showing a general notification for all PostgreSQL instances, regardless of their specific version.
  2. There might be a planned maintenance or update for your RDS instance that is not directly related to the version upgrade recommendation.
  3. It could be an oversight in the dashboard's reporting system.

To ensure you're not missing any important updates, you could take the following steps:

  1. Double-check that your instance is indeed running version 14.15.
  2. Consider enabling Automatic Minor Version Upgrades if you haven't already. This will ensure your instance receives future minor version updates automatically during your maintenance window.
  3. Contact AWS Support for clarification if you're concerned about the discrepancy between your current version and the "Affected Resources" listing.

While your current version doesn't require immediate action based on the upgrade notice, staying informed about future updates and maintaining your database at the latest minor version is generally recommended for security and performance reasons.

The notices are manually reviewed and sent to customers by AWS support this is usually not an automated process.

I would contact Cloud Support to request clarification.
