Why do I need to setup LightSail DNS records when I have Route53 DNS records?

I don't understand I why I need to re-create all my DNS records in LightSail under new name server records when I already have this domain setup on Route 53? I have many other services running under sub-domains on Route53.

I found that I am able to create an A record on my DNS records on Route53 to the static IP of LightSail. Should perhaps be something more clear on the LightSail side.

You don't need to setup Lightsail DNS records. As long as the Name servers for your domain name are set to the ones for your Route 53, you can use route 53 for DNS.
