Hello.
I tried starting Aurora 5.7.mysql_aurora.2.11.4 with my AWS account and was able to successfully select Aurora MySQL 3.07.1 in Blue/Green deployment.
There are a few potential reasons why you might not see the option for Blue/Green deployment or the ability to upgrade directly to MySQL 8 for your Aurora cluster:
-
Blue/Green Deployments: This feature is not directly available for Aurora clusters in the same way it is for RDS instances. For Aurora, the process is different and involves creating a clone or using other methods.
-
Direct upgrade to MySQL 8: Aurora doesn't support direct in-place upgrades from version 2 (MySQL 5.7 compatible) to version 3 (MySQL 8.0 compatible). This is a major version upgrade that requires a different approach.
For upgrading an Aurora MySQL 5.7 cluster to 8.0, you typically need to follow these steps:
- Create a clone of your existing Aurora MySQL 5.7 cluster.
- Upgrade the clone to Aurora MySQL 8.0.
- Test your applications with the upgraded clone.
- When ready, cut over your applications to the new Aurora MySQL 8.0 cluster.
If you need to minimize downtime, you can use AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) with change data capture (CDC) to keep the new cluster in sync with the old one until you're ready to switch over.
Remember that upgrading to MySQL 8.0 offers numerous advantages, including enhanced performance, advanced features, and continued community support. However, it requires thorough testing to ensure compatibility with your applications.
If you're still unable to see upgrade options or create a clone, you may want to check if your current Aurora version is supported for upgrade, or if there are any regional limitations. In case of persistent issues, contacting AWS support might be helpful for specific guidance tailored to your setup.

Can this be checked out by an expert? Why does all the documentation and notifications from AWS suggest Blue/Green deployment? And doesn't mention at all that "This feature is not directly available for Aurora clusters in the same way it is for RDS instances."?
Thanks Riku, all I get is this:
Is it possible we're still on Aurora Serverless v1?

I tried regular Aurora, not Aurora Serverless. Seeing the image you shared is using Aurora Serverless. Blue/Green deployments are not supported in Aurora Serverless V1 as described in the documentation below. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/AuroraUserGuide/blue-green-deployments-considerations.html
Why do we get warned that we need to upgrade, when the email about the upgrade says "If you are running Amazon Aurora MySQL 2 (with MySQL 5.7 compatibility) in an Aurora Serverless v1 cluster, this communication does not apply to you."?
Support for Aurora Serverless V1 ends on December 31, 2024. I think this is a different notification from the MySQL 5.7 upgrade, and a notification for the end of support for Aurora Serverless V1. https://www.infoq.com/news/2024/01/aurora-serverless-v1-retirement/#:~:text=We%20are%20reaching%20out%20to,Serverless%20version%201%20(v1).
Nope, it was definitely the MySQL upgrade:
You are receiving this message because you have one or more Amazon Aurora MySQL clusters running a version of Aurora MySQL 2 (with MySQL 5.7 compatibility) on a provisioned instance in the EU-WEST-1 Region. If you are running Amazon Aurora MySQL 2 (with MySQL 5.7 compatibility) in an Aurora Serverless v1 cluster, this communication does not apply to you.
Amazon Aurora MySQL 2 (with MySQL 5.7 compatibility) will reach end of standard support on October 31, 2024. We are providing you with a periodic reminder, following up from our previous notice, so you have sufficient time to upgrade your database cluster(s). Please note that upgrading between major versions requires more extensive planning and testing than for a minor version and the process can take substantial time.
I'm not sure how AWS is detecting the use of "Amazon Aurora MySQL 2 (with MySQL 5.7 compatibility)" by users, but depending on the detection method, it is possible that users of Aurora Serverless V1 are also being notified. In any case, since the end of support for Aurora Serverless V1 is approaching, it is recommended to upgrade. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/AuroraUserGuide/aurora-serverless-v2.upgrade.html#aurora-serverless-v2.upgrade-from-serverless-v1-procedure https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/AuroraUserGuide/aurora-serverless.modifying.html#aurora-serverless.modifying.convert
