why the sample function is so slow in neptune?

I want to get 100 samples in a list which contains about 560000 elements using gremlin_python from neptune. But it won't return the result to me in 2 minutes and I will get timeout exception.
It's obvious that such operation is very fast in python. So I'm wondering why it's so slow in neptune?

In general the Apache TinkerPop Gremlin
samplestep tends to not be very efficient with very large datasets. However I would have expected it to work OK across 560K elements. What size of Neptune instance are you using to run these tests?
