This is a common issue with AWS billing access. Even though you may have administrative privileges, access to the AWS Billing and Cost Management console is restricted by default as a specific security measure.
The error message you're seeing indicates an authorization issue with the billing console. This typically happens for one of two reasons:
- If you're using an IAM user account (not the root account): By default, IAM users cannot access billing information even if they have AdministratorAccess policy. This is because the root user needs to explicitly activate IAM access to the Billing and Cost Management console.
To resolve this, the root user (the email address and password used to create the AWS account) needs to:
- Sign in to the AWS Management Console
- Select the account name in the navigation bar, then select "Account"
- Scroll down to the "IAM User and Role Access to Billing Information" section
- Select "Edit"
- Check the "Activate IAM Access" box
- Choose "Update"
- If you're using the root account: There might be an issue with your account status. Check your email for any notifications from AWS about your account status, as your account might be on hold due to billing issues.
After enabling the setting (if using an IAM user), you'll also need appropriate billing permissions attached to your IAM user or role to access the billing information.
