If you’re installing Amplify Gen 2 locally, there is no .ampx file that needs to be installed manually — AMPX files are generated by Amplify during the build process when you run amplify sandbox or amplify pull.
Try the following:
Make sure you’ve installed the latest Amplify CLI (npm install -g @aws-amplify/cli).
Run amplify -v to confirm CLI version is up-to-date.
If you’re following a tutorial, initialize a new Amplify project with amplify init — the .ampx file will be generated automatically inside the amplify folder when the backend is provisioned.
You don’t need to disable antivirus or reinstall Node to get AMPX. It’s created dynamically, not something you download.

To use AWS Amplify Gen 2, you need to use the ampx command which is accessed through npx, not as a standalone file. The command format is npx ampx followed by the specific command you want to run.
For example, to check your Amplify setup and environment, you can run:
npx ampx info
This command will display information about your system, binaries, npm packages, and AWS environment variables, which can help troubleshoot issues with your Amplify installation.
If you're trying to create a sandbox environment, you would use:
npx ampx sandbox
If you're still encountering issues, make sure you have the Amplify packages properly installed in your project. You can check your package.json file to ensure you have dependencies like @aws-amplify/backend and @aws-amplify/backend-cli installed.
Also, verify that your AWS credentials are properly configured using aws configure and that you have the necessary permissions to use Amplify services.
