Why am i receiving DNS queries while none of my purchased domains is connected to a website?

In the Route 53 billing section I can see that 2,915.000 DNS Queries have been made so far. Thats funny because none of my domains are currently connected to a website/webserver. So where do these 2,915 DNS queries come from exactly? A significant amount of DNS queries were made in previous months as well. Ranging from 4000 up to 9000 or so. Is this normal? Does anyone else experience this?

Thank you

You can turn on "Public DNS query logging" to identify the offending queries (incurs additional CloudWatch charges, so remember to turn it off)

If I had to guess, it'd be either a record with health check configured, or external parties scanning for security reasons (e.g., domain name reputation, network footprinting, etc.)

  • @NaticC-AWS, I have no record with a health check configured. How would external parties know about the domain i've bought?

  • People don't have to know about domain names - it's very easy to write code to scan for available domain names and then make queries against those domains.
